The United States advanced to its first FIFA final after Wednesday’s upset win over No. 1-ranked Spain, 2-0, on goals by Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey. Brazil made it to the title game by ousting the host nation, South Africa, 1-0, on a late free kick by Daniel Alves.
The only change in the starting lineup for the United States was made out of necessity. Benny Feilhaber, who was born in Brazil, replaces Michael Bradley, who took a straight red card in the 87th minute of the win over Spain.
The U.S. has only beaten Brazil (a five-time World Cup winner) once, in a match in the Concacaf Gold Cup in 1998. Brazil is the clear favorite to win the match, seeking its third Confederations Cup crown, but that’s why they play the game.

Brazil looked to have ruined the American dream when they met in the group stage, but the USA has discovered a new land of opportunity in the subsequent 10 days.
Their South Africa sojourn threatened to be an embarrassment after the abject 3-0 defeat to Brazil on 18 June. Sunil Gulati, the president of the US Soccer Federation, was inundated with e-mails from angry fans demanding that national coach Bob Bradley be fired. No-one is writing off Bradley's side now.
The US became the first team in Confederations Cup history to qualify from the group stage with three points and a negative goal difference.
They then shocked Spain in the semi-final in arguably their greatest win since the 1-0 defeat of England at the 1950 World Cup. But can they leave the Rainbow Nation with a pot of gold?
No doubt the US will harry Brazil's flair players as they did so effectively against Spain. Modern-day Brazil though are themselves built on a supreme work ethic and have match-winners all over the pitch.
The defending champions are contesting their fourth Confederations Cup final. But if Brazil, a superstitious nation, believe in omens, then victory could come at a price. No Confederations Cup winner has ever gone on to win the next World Cup.

Gay pride has been publicly celebrated throughout the world during the month of June since the early 1970's.
Originating in New York City, the Gay Pride Parade is actually just one rainbow-colored event among many that goes on in NYC during Gay Pride Week.
Typically, the NYC Gay Pride Parade is held on the last day of the week in late June. Also held on the last day are the Gay Pride Festival, along with the annual Dance on the Pier following the parade wrapping up Gay Pride Week in a grand fireworks display.

Remembering Stonewall
2009 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969, and a reminder that the Gay Pride Parade was not always such a festive event.
The original purpose of the parade was to commemorate the riots at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay and lesbian bar of the time that became the epicenter for violent protests against the unlawful treatment that gays and lesbians suffered at the hands of the New York City police department.
The Stonewall riots are now considered a major turning point in the Gay Rights movement, and the Gay Pride Parade still goes past the site every year to pay tribute to its significance.
There is also a moment of silence during the Gay Pride Parade, which was adopted in 1986 by organizers as a response to the AIDS crisis, which was at that time a particularly heated issue within the gay and lesbian community.

Nationally known TV ad pitchman Billy Mays, 50, was found dead this morning in his Tampa home, the Tampa Police Department reported.
Mays was found unresponsive by his wife and the Tampa Fire Rescue pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m., the report said.
There were no signs of forced entry to the residence and no foul play is suspected, police said.
The Medical Examiner's Office is expected to complete the autopsy by Monday afternoon.
"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days," Mays' wife Deborah said in a statement the police released.
"Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times."
Mays rose to for promoting OxiClean, Orange Glo, Kaboom and other household products like the Mighty Putty glue.
In April, he launched a new reality series, "Pitchmen," on the Discovery Channel to show viewers new gadgets such as the Impact Gel shoe insert; the Tool Band-it, a magnetized armband that holds tools while you work; and the Soft Buns portable seat cushion.
Mays was on U.S. Airways Flight 1241 when it blew its front tires as it landed Saturday, forcing the airport to shut down the busy north-south runway, according to authorities.

More than a dozen soldiers arrested President Manuel Zelaya and disarmed his security guards after surrounding his residence before dawn Sunday, his private secretary said. Protesters called it a coup and flocked to the presidential palace as local news media reported that Zelaya was sent into exile.
The chief executive was detained shortly before voting was to begin on a constitutional referendum the president had insisted on holding even though the Supreme Court ruled it illegal and everyone from the military to Congress and members of his own party opposed it.
Zelaya was taken into military custody at his house outside the capital, Tegucigalpa, and whisked away to an air force base on the outskirts of the city, his private secretary, Carlos Enrique Reina told The Associated Press.

Three people were killed seven wounded Saturday in a drive-by shooting at a motorcycle club fundraiser in California, authorities said.The shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. (9:45 p.m. ET) at a pizza restaurant in Pico Rivera, located about 15 miles east of Los Angeles, according to authorities.
"We don't know what type of vehicle was involved or how many," said Sgt. Ed Hummel of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.The event was being held by a group known as the Old School Riders. Baskett was said to have worn white as well, while bridesmaids were decked out in lavender.
Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett became engaged in November 2008, and just a few weeks ago it was announced that Kendra and Hank are expecting, with the little one reportedly due to arrive on Christmas Day.

Now, the X-rated empire Larry Flynt built is producing “Hollywood’s Nailin’ Palin,” in which, among other surely tawdry deeds, “Sarah Palin” gets it on with “Tina Fey” playing Sarah Palin on “SNL.” It’s all so confusing. In any case, the sure to be, um, fascinating latest homage to the politician who will not go away is set to be released early this summer. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing. Connie Hamzy (born January 9, 1953) is an American woman from Little Rock, Arkansas who is best known as a groupie who claims to have had sex with numerous rock musicians. Hamzy also received some attention for her claim that she was propositioned by Bill Clinton, then governor of Arkansas.
She is mentioned in Grand Funk Railroad's song "We're an American Band" ("Sweet, sweet Connie, doin' her act/ She had the whole show and that's a natural fact.")
Hamzy personally claims to have given oral sex to various members of the many bands that have traveled through Little Rock. Her alleged groupie escapades were detailed in a Cosmopolitan profile in 1974, and in 1992 she wrote a tell-all article for Penthouse.
In 1991, Hamzy was briefly in the news due to her claim that, in 1984, she had been approached by an Arkansas state trooper on behalf of Bill Clinton. She claimed that she and Clinton had looked for "a place where they could have some privacy for an assignation, but couldn't find one." George Stephanopoulos later recounted that Clinton told him a different story of his meeting with Hamzy. According to Clinton, Hamzy had approached him in a hotel lobby, flipped down her bikini top, and asked him, "What do you think of these?" Stephanopoulos secured affidavits from three people who had been accompanying Clinton and confirmed Clinton's recollection. When asked about Hamzy by reporters, Stephanopoulos responded by denying the story off the record and offering to provide the affidavits, also off the record. Although CNN Headline News reported Hamzy's allegations once, neither CNN nor other mainstream news organizations pursued the story further.
Hamzy published a memoir in 1995 under the title Rock Groupie: The Intimate Adventures of "Sweet Connie" from Little Rock (ISBN 9781561713615).
In 1996, Hamzy sought to run as an independent for the United States House of Representatives from Arkansas' 2nd congressional district, but ultimately did not appear on the general election ballot.

All events including the fireworks show will run on the same schedule (times) tomorrow, Sunday, June 28. Paid parking will be available for large vehicles in the Sherman Plaza Shopping Center lot. A goal of this exit traffic plan is to minimize traffic conflicts and delay for pedestrians and the anticipated 50,000 vehicles attempting to leave the Warner Park area. Spectators may help minimize congestion in the following ways: (1) Take advantage of the shuttle bus. Arrive early and park in the MATC parking lot to ride the shuttle bus to and from Warner Park. (2) Ride Madison Metro. Metro will have extra buses at the North Transfer Station, on Huxley at Aberg. Call 266-4466 for schedule and route information. Last bus leaves at 11:30 p.m. (3) Have patience. Approximately 50,000 vehicles will be arriving during the 12 hours prior to the event. There will be extended delays in moving all these vehicles out of the area in the hours after the event concludes. (4) Park According to Exit Direction. Motorists who park in the surrounding neighborhoods should park close to the desired exit direction. For example, those wishing to travel to the northwest should park northwest of Warner Park. Authorities arrested Mark Musselwhite and charged him with public indecency last weekend after state Department of Natural Resources officers found him sitting nude at his Rabun County campsite.
Officers had received a complaint about a naked man walking along a nearby road earlier in the day, but the 43-year-old Musselwhite said he was not the same man. Musselwhite told the DNR officer he had been swimming in a nearby creek.

5. Paris Hilton (2002) I include this one because it would seem ignorant not to. But I'm not a big fan. The night-vision doesn't really do it for me, nor does the moronic banter between Hilton and Rick Salomon. And Salomon's camera-work is shoddy at best. The less-viewed last half hour--probably shot on a different day than the night-vision part--is full of glimpses of Paris's privates, but we never get a real excellent nude shot. Which might be for the best, anyway. I hear herpes sores are even less pretty on film.
4. Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee (1998) Many will wonder why this isn't higher. Here's why: too much of Tommy Lee's penis. I'm not really sure what the deal is here, but the point is, his penis dominates. The ugly(er) side of too much penis, of course, is less Pam. I would've given the camera to Pam, though, for at least a couple minutes.

Confronted with two beautiful bisexuals, Dustin can't help acting like a middle school class clown--you know, that one kid who made ninety jokes an hour, about two of which were funny. As an added insult, the two drunk girls he's with seem more interested in each other than him. I like this tape, though, because of its honesty. Dustin is totally bewildered in the presence of two drunken lesbians, which is the same way most of us would feel, I imagine. The posh setting--a Vegas hotel suite--offsets Dustin's awkwardness nicely. And the two girls, though morally unscrupulous, seem earnest and unpretentious. Bonus points for use of props--it'll be awhile before I eat one of those candy bracelets without thinking of this video.

After a one-year hiatus, the Western States Endurance Run will make its return for the 36th time this weekend.
The 100-mile run, which starts in Squaw Valley and ends in Auburn, was canceled last summer due to heavy smoke from area wildfires.
The race will begin at 5 a.m. today and runners must reach the finish line no later than 11 a.m. Sunday to be considered a finisher of the event.
According to the event’s web site, about 1,500 volunteers will support the 445 registered runners making the their way through the trek.
Among those registered are Grass Valley’s Peggy Davidson, Bill Hunter, Molly Star and Donn Zea.

Actress Farrah Fawcett, whose layered blonde mane and ubiquitous swimsuit poster transformed the once-unknown "Charlie's Angels" star into a '70s icon, died Thursday. She was 62.
Fawcett - who waged a three-year battle against anal cancer - died shortly before 9:30 a.m. in a Santa Monica, Calif., hospital, said her spokesman, Paul Bloch.

Reports of Jeff Goldblum's and Harrison Ford's deaths are grossly exaggerated.
As the nation was hit with not one, but two tragic celebrity deaths on Thursday - Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson - the Internet seemed to suggest two more Hollywood demises had occurred that same day: "Jurassic Park" actor Goldblum and "Indiana Jones" himself, Harrison Ford.
The rumors of Goldblum and Ford's untimely deaths turned out to be false, and were in fact well-known Internet pranks that once made similar claims of Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise.

The Cavs reached and to be honest drafted someone I know very little about. Christian Eyenga from the Congo is still very underdeveloped and will likely stay oversees. This could be a possible trading piece for the Cavs if they desire to move him. I still think this is a reach for a team that needs shooting now not later. He could be a great project, but this team doesn’t need projects right now. Here is Eyengra’s breakdown from ESPN:

The best thing is that most of the other sites I have reviewed have said his biggest weaknesses are that he needs more time to develop. The Cavs plan to get older for this season, but somewhere down the line they will need to replace players and Eyenga can do that in a few years (at least I’m trying to put a positive spin on at).

2. Soviet Union beats United States in 1972 men's Olympic basketball final
I'm going to go with one of Page 2's dishonorable mentions ... the USA-USSR 1972 gold medal basketball final was the worst snow job in Olympic history.
The USA had won every single game between 1936 and the 1972 final. And the USA would have won that game, too, if it weren't for a British FIBA official telling the timekeeper to put three seconds back on the clock. It seems FIBA had to cheat in order to give another country the gold medal.
It's just too bad that the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 -- I was hoping the Dream Team would have wiped the floor in 1992 against the Soviets to get revenge in Barcelona on their Communist butts for what happened in Munich.

There was no way that the U.S. men should have lost the gold, and only a scam as big as the biased referees could possibly hand the title to the Soviet Union. I was not even alive for those Olympic games, but every replay I've seen of the last few seconds of the game angers me. It's not even a measure of national pride -- it's the fact that, of all athletic competitions, the Olympics are supposed to be fair. More than any other event, the game proved that anything, no matter how sacred, could be corrupt ted.

3. SMU Football receives the "death penalty"
I was shocked to see this one not even mentioned. How about the cheating scandal that surrounded the SMU football team in the mid-1980s, which ended with the NCAA giving the school the death penalty?
While it did not end up influencing future NCAA policy that much, it pretty much buried the football program at SMU, which enjoyed constant success along the same level as a school like Syracuse does today. The football program at SMU (alumni include Doak Walker and Eric Dickerson) has dropped off the national radar screen and may never reach the level it once did.

4. Roy Jones Jr. loses decision after pummeling South Korea's Si Hun Park in light middleweight final at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul
I remember being 12 years old and watching this on TV and being outraged because the judges gave the decision to Park, just to make sure that there wasn't another "incident" like there was in the earlier fight. Probably the worst sports moment I've ever watched on TV. I still to this day wonder if Park can ever convince himself that he deserved that medal?

5. Pete Rose betting-on-baseball scandal
In my mind, the worst sports scandal is Pete Rose's banishment from baseball. The 1919 Black Sox scandal ultimately did more harm to the game, but Rose's case was much more tragic. Here you have the manager for the Cincinnati Reds, the sport's all-time leader in base hits, and he gets thrown out of the game for illegally betting on baseball.
He should, however, be recognized in the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a player, while noting his lifetime banishment for betting on baseball. To this day, ESPN has never covered a bigger story.

6. Danny Almonte Little League age scandal
The Black Sox scandal may be the most infamous scandal in Major League Baseball history, but the Danny Almonte situation from last year's LLWS absolutely reeks.
What could be worse than defrauding a child to gain an unfair advantage and beat up on a bunch of kids? The part that hurts the most is that we really believed in this kid. We thought he was the future of baseball, the next Randy Johnson, the representation of all that is good and pure about the U.S. pastime. But it was all a sham. We were had by Danny's father and the team coach. Sure he's good, but we were led to believe he was something he's not.
In a situation like this, everybody loses. And if Little League Baseball is no longer a sanctuary of innocence and sportsmanship, then what is?

7. Skategate I, starring Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan
Tonya Harding was stripped of her '94 U.S. title because of her role in the Nancy Kerrigan attack.
There are many kinds of scandals, but when you are hiring people to attack someone, that is just over the edge. That is beyond cheating or lying. That is conspiracy, and I still think Harding should've been punished more.
It is funny though, that Kerrigan got silver and Harding did terrible. No wonder she needed to eliminate Kerrigan.

What takes this one above the top was Clem Haskins' obscene insistence that he did nothing wrong. He should have apologized and accepted responsibility like a man. Oh yeah, and he should have relinquished any claim to further compensation for running the program into the ground.

Not only did FSU get just a slap on the wrist for this violation, but it was followed by Warrick and Coles at Dillard's for the big discount, after which Warrick continued to play that season. Criminoles take the cake.

10. Jim Thorpe loses his pentathlon and decathlon Olympic gold medals
Tough choice, but I'm going with the Jim Thorpe scandal. Thorpe was systematically and maliciously discriminated against entirely because of his ethnic background. I consider him to be the greatest athlete in U.S. history, perhaps next to Jesse Owens, and he was stripped of the greatest athletic achievements of his life by a group of bigots.
If Thorpe's medals had not been stripped, he would have had a more illuminating legacy and would have certainly opened the door for a greater number of American Indians to achieve their dreams. The message that was sent at the time was heard loud and clear: American Indians will not be allowed to win, even when they're the best.
Perhaps our country would have had a Lakota Nobel Prize winner, a Sioux World War II general, or a Cherokee congressman had Thorpe gotten the respect he deserved. Instead, white America chose to stain his image and paint him as a "cheater," merely because the man played a few games of minor-league baseball.
Olympic athletes armed with agents and multimillion dollar contracts are now revered. Go figure.

The Oscar-winning composer behind 'You Light Up My Life' raped 11 women he lured to his apartment with the promise of a starring role in a movie, prosecutors said today.
The women read an online ad placed by director, Joseph Brooks, applied for the audition 'and thought this was their chance to become a big star,' prosecutor Lisa Friel said.
Instead, once the women were in Brooks' Manhattan apartment, he plied them with wine and forcibly raped them or used threats and coercive behavior to make them have sex with him, prosecutors said.
