Jesse James Hollywood: Guilty of Murder and Kidnapping

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

A Santa Barbara today jury found Jesse James Hollywood guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping for ordering the slaying of Nicholas Markowitz.

The jury concluded that Hollywood was the ringleader of a group of mostly teenage suburban drug users who, when trying to collect a $1,200 debt from Ben Markowitz, kidnapped and later killed his younger stepbrother, Nicholas. After holding the 15-year-old for a few days, Hollywood decided he didn't want to face charges related to the abduction; planning he'd never be found, Nicholas was walked into a park, shot and buried. Hollywood himself was not at the scene when the murder occurred.

If the crime sounds familiar, that's because it was the basis for the 2006 film "Alpha Dog," starring Emile Hirsch as the Hollywood-esque character and Justin Timberlake.

This was the fourth trial in the case. Each of the other defendants has been convicted; one has been released after serving time, another has been sentenced to life in prison, and the man who pulled the trigger is on death row. Hollywood evaded capture by California authorities and lived as a fugitive in Brazil for four years before his 2005 apprehension.

Some of the most compelling coverage of the trial has come from Natasha Vargas-Cooper, who grew up with Nicholas Markowitz in West Hills and has been writing about her memories and the proceedings for The Awl. From her posts there:

I grew up with Nick Markowitz. We had a three-day hand-holding affair the summer of 7th grade. He was a part of my tight circle of goofy theater kid friends who were transformed into a traumatized fraternity after his murder....

Nick was lanky, awkward, and emotional. I remember giving him several tight hugs during our friendship while he would sob because he was distraught. Nick was handsome and funny but he never fit in, though he was eager to.

As we got older, Nick became increasingly out of sorts with the dorky drama crowd. He became more shy, more conscious of the high school pecking order. His older step-brother Ben, a thug in the neighborhood, was letting Nick kick around with his group of friends more frequently. Ben’s friends were a cluster of older, small-time drug dealers. I imagine it was difficult for Nick to alternate between drinking with tattooed twenty-year-olds to staying after school so he could practice mime with a bunch of 13-year-old thespians.
So by the end of freshmen year, Nick had dropped out of drama. I felt betrayed that he chose a group of dope-slanging outsiders over us. I snubbed him when he greeted me with a huge smile...

[District Attorney] Lynn asked how much force Hollywood used when he pinned [Nick Markowitz] against a tree, while his previously-convicted accomplices William Skidmore and Jesse Rugge punched Nick in the stomach before they threw him in the van.

Hollywood explained that he had to use a significant amount of strength because “Nick is taller than me."

“Nick was taller than you. He was taller than you, Mr. Hollywood,” Lynn said...

Whatever humanizing counter-narrative Hollywood was expected to create while telling a story that we have waited to hear for nearly a decade—well, none of it materialized.

That last post was written while the trial was under way. While the narrative may not be satisfying, perhaps the verdict will be.

Very Hot and Sexy Laura Posada appears on “Baseball Wives” reality show tonight

Fresh from A radio interview in Spanish with 97.9 FM Tuesday morning, Laura Posada breezes along 56th St., into the lobby of the midtown Chambers Hotel, causing plenty of whiplash among the sidewalk traffic. Sporting heels, a short summer dress and a new Anna Wintour-style coif, the wife of the veteran Yankees catcher and the mother of two is making the publicity rounds for her reality TV debut, set to air tonight on the E! network.

"In the beginning, I was a little apprehensive. I wasn't sure if it's something I should do or not," says Posada. "But then (the E! producers) explained what they were trying to do, which is really show what it is, for real, to be a baseball wife."

Baseball fans and curiosity seekers who tune into "True Hollywood Story: Baseball Wives" tonight at 10 p.m. and expect to find scandals galore in the lives of the Posadas or the Hamelses (pitcher Cole Hamels of the Phillies and wife, Heidi) or other baseball families, might be surprised.

"People think that just because you're married to a baseball player, that you're dumb, that you're a gold digger, that you're an ex-stripper," says Laura. "That's not the way it is. I still haven't met that one girl. Most of the girls that I know, that are baseball wives, are super sweet girls. They're successful in their own right. I really hope that after people see this show, they realize that there's a lot more than just what people think baseball wives are."

This past week, the NFL community and its fans were rocked by the death of former Titans and Ravens quarterback Steve McNair. McNair's girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, was found dead alongside McNair in Tennessee - both shot with a handgun purchased by Kazemi - and police are investigating whether the incident was a murder-suicide. It revealed a secret, second life of the popular McNair, a married father of four. Last year, the Daily News exposed a long-term affair of former Yankee pitcher Roger Clemens with the country singer Mindy McCready, and Jorge Posada's current teammate Alex Rodriguez has had no shortage of headlines that reflect his personal life.

Laura Posada sees the bold headlines that sometimes play out in New York tabloids, and she is well aware of the many days that her husband is on the road, where female fans and groupies congregate outside a baseball stadium.

"I'm sure that there are girls like that. I mean, it happens with everything. It happens in sports, with celebrities, with actors, actresses, singers. But it can happen to anybody. It can happen to a normal housewife whose husband is a realtor or a contractor or whatever," she says. "You can't worry about that. I have to live my life and focus on my kids and my family and trust that my husband is going to make the right decisions."

NYC and Chicago Pride Parade 2009

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Gay pride has been publicly celebrated throughout the world during the month of June since the early 1970's.

Originating in New York City, the Gay Pride Parade is actually just one rainbow-colored event among many that goes on in NYC during Gay Pride Week.

Typically, the NYC Gay Pride Parade is held on the last day of the week in late June. Also held on the last day are the Gay Pride Festival, along with the annual Dance on the Pier following the parade wrapping up Gay Pride Week in a grand fireworks display.

NYC Gay Pride 2009

This year, watch for the festivities to kick off in New York on June 20 with the annual rally at Bryant Park at 42nd Street and 6th Avenue, continuing through to the parade march down Fifth Avenue on June 28, 2009 — beginning at 52nd Street and heading south to Christopher Street in Greenwich Village

Remembering Stonewall

2009 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969, and a reminder that the Gay Pride Parade was not always such a festive event.

The original purpose of the parade was to commemorate the riots at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay and lesbian bar of the time that became the epicenter for violent protests against the unlawful treatment that gays and lesbians suffered at the hands of the New York City police department.

The Stonewall riots are now considered a major turning point in the Gay Rights movement, and the Gay Pride Parade still goes past the site every year to pay tribute to its significance.

There is also a moment of silence during the Gay Pride Parade, which was adopted in 1986 by organizers as a response to the AIDS crisis, which was at that time a particularly heated issue within the gay and lesbian community.
